I wasn’t good enough to do this, so I settled on removing each pin from the connector instead. That’s definitely not the ideal way of removing the cable, but it worked for me. If you’re a little more patient and a little more skilled, you could probably do it the way iFixit recommends in their picture guide.

Despite the updates and bug fixes Apple has released for OS X 10.9 Mavericks, there appear to be plenty of users still having this issue based on the discussions in the Apple Support Forum. On my Mac Mini, I have not seen this problem reoccurring since the fix described above. Also, On my MacBook Pro, I have not seen this issue at all. I’d highly recommend doing a clean install of OS X, without migrating or restoring anything but actual user data (documents, pictures, videos…). That means not restoring any profile settings or data.

Check the "Memory Pressure" graph. It's at the bottom-left of the Activity Monitor window.
Now drag and drop the images you want to import from the Finder directly into the open albums view of Photos app
What about downloading pictures from iCloud backups or iTunes backups?
